No Rollin' Rollin' Rollin'

So this is not part of our weekly theme of plastic bag's, however something caught our attention today and we thought we should share...

Soooo, today marked the beginning of Tim Horton's Roll up the Rim to win promo...

About RRRoll Up

"People all across Canada and the United States are celebrating their favourite promotion at Tim Hortons stores. That's right, Roll Up The Rim To Win® is back - bigger and better than ever! Beginning February 23, 2009, customers can purchase a hot beverage in Canada** or in the United States** and roll up the rim on their cup to see if they have won a prize...." ~ Tim Horton's Website

Do you spot the problem?....

Uuuummmm what about those of us using re-usable coffee mugs? The way it works is if you have a re-usable mug OR are staying in with a Timmy's mug... you are given the paper cup to ROLL and then toss away... BRUTAL!

This is not fair, or good, on many levels...

1. For one, Our husbands said they'd kick us (just jokes) if we didn't "take the cup and
roll"... haa ha... have you seeeen the prizes!? But... we DIDN'T... bc. that would mean we were buying into the whole thing... (does that last comment make us sound like we wear our Birkenstocks with sox, haa ha, bc. we don't... NOT that there is anything wrong with that, lol) anyways moving on...

2. Why must we as the
responsible coffee drinkers that we are, be punished for doing the RIGHT thing? For that alone, they should be GIVING us the prizes.. right?!

3. Not only does it SUCK that we can't get in on this deal (or I am choosing not to), however they are promoting using cups (to roll) without actually USING them and then
tossing them away...

4. As stated on the contest rules:
"A total of
281,686,000 contest cups have been produced for this contest. These will be available for distribution through May 1, 2009 or while supplies last, whichever occurs first. " OK, YIKES, first of all that number is crazzzy, second of all bc. there is a prize attached to that number many will not be fazed by it and third... how many cups do coffee houses like Timmy's and Starbucks go through in a year? WOW WOW WOW!!!

OK, so after this rant, we have a little more clarification of our own,
but what do you think?...
We are takin'
Earth GREEN instead of $$$MONEY$$$ GREEN approach. When we are on our death beds, (morbid as it sounds,) would you feel better about leaving a healthy earth behind for your children rather than a wad of cash!
But hey, we know it isn't easy in this world of ours... temptations, money and power are the driving forces in our society and it's hard to change our mindsets!

  1. Hey Heather and Chanel!!

Just want to say I love your blog!! It is encouraging me to do my part. As Heather knows I recently had a baby and am astounded by the number of diapers that we go through. I am making the choice to switch to cloth diapers but know nothing about them. So I will be doing some research, if you lovely ladies have any insight I would love to hear it!

I also feel your pain about the roll up to rim. However My Mother in Law works there so I am not eligible to win anything so it makes it easier for my husband and I to use our travel mugs!!!!

    Keep up the good work!!!

    Hugs Caval!!!

  2. Grrrreat point Heather!! wowwowowo,,.... that is astounding, and to encourage people to use reusable mugs, I definitely agree that they should have an incentive! They could even have a smaller piece of recyclable (or even better.. recycled)paper that we, the reusable and responsible mug people, could get with our purchase that could give us a chance to win! Even better, these tabs could have better odds of winning to encourage people to bring in their plastic mugs! I think we should be sending your entry to Timmie's.... how 'bout you????
Thanks again for the awwwwesome eye opener/rant, I think it's great to open up that dialogue!

Great hearing form you Caval, thanks so very much for supporting our blog, and besides the point, your name is b-e-a-utiful!! This fall, I did some research into recyclable, reusable diapers, and believe it or not, they have come SUCH a long way since we were babies!! They appear to be much less messy and gross as I believe they used to be, and they contain disposable and recyclable liners that can be thrown out in order to make the diapers less messy and make it easier for parents! In addition, the cloths come in such funky patterns, I wouldn't be able to resist buying one, it would be so cute! Heather and I are wanting to eventually sell these products on our site, but here is the website for the wholesaler, you might be able to find some online: www.gdiapers.com. I have never used them, but they are affordable and look prety cool!! Let us know what you think!

    Sincerely, Chanel

  3. Dear ladies...

As a young mom, I have look into the G diapers. I think they are a wonderful idea and a great alternative to always doing laundry with clothe diapers. I was even going to purchase the G diapers (avaliable at the health food store by Willow Grove and I recently saw them at London Drugs.) but, being a young family on a budget they are not really that affordable. I don't remember how much they are, I was looking at them when they first came out, but I figured it out in my head and I think it was like 5 times more expensive then using the none environmentally friendly disposable ones. Which brings be to another point. Why is all the greener stuff, so much more money? Sure you see all the celebs wearing organic clothing driving hybribs, they can afford to. They need to start making these types of products more affordable. Don't you agree?

  4. Amen Kendra!
As more an more people begin to use environmentally responsible products the costs will come down... Its all about supply and demand. As long as there isn't a great demand for the more responsible product (and therefore a lack of competition for your dollars), and more importantly because the companies can command a price premium for their "eco-products" the prices will remain high.
The best action: write to the companies, tell them your situation. Tell them that you want to be a loyal customer who respects their efforts to be environmentally friendly, but they need to bring their price points down!
If nothing else, it will make you feel better...

  6. I'm really mad at Tim Horton's right now, but to their credit, they have an online version of their "roll up the rim to win" contest... I was looking at the site earlier but have lost it, I'm sure you could google it.

I've got kind of a Tim Horton's blog going right now actually, if you're interested:
